The Route

The goal of this journey was to challenge myself physically and mentally, all while seeing the country in a wild and exciting way. For those of you my age, you should be familiar with the game Oregon Trail (on the old Apple II computers). If our ancestors traveled to the west coast via wagon with nothing more than 5 sets of clothes, 3 wagon wheels, and 500 rounds of ammunition, I think crossing the country with the resources of the Internet, cell phones, and a little thing I like to call civilization shouldn't be too hard.

During the trip, I stopped many places to visit friends and family. I met people I had never known before (both randomly and by prearrangement). I also saw ten baseball games (my touring record was 7-3).

Here are some of the cities/metro areas I visited:
  • Boston, MA
  • Southington, CT
  • Stamford, CT
  • New York, NY
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • Baltimore, MD
  • Washington D.C.
  • Fredericksburg, VA
  • Barea, KY
  • Harrisburg, IL
  • St. Louis, MO
  • Columbia, MO
  • Kansas City, MO
  • Kansas City, KS
  • Denver, CO
  • Colorado Springs, CO
  • Durango, CO
  • Grand Canyon National Park, AZ
  • Williams, AZ
  • Prescott, AZ
  • Phoenix, AZ
  • Yuma, AZ
  • San Diego, CA
  • San Onofre, CA
  • Los Angeles, CA
  • Palm Springs, CA (via family)
  • Malibu, CA
  • Santa Barbara, CA
  • Big Sur, CA
  • Santa Cruz, CA
  • San Francisco, CA (bike trip ended here)
  • Palo Alto, CA (via friends)
  • Oakland, CA (via friends)
  • Seattle, WA (via Amtrak)
  • Chicago, IL (via Amtrak)
Upon reaching Los Angeles, my parents met me and we stayed in Palm Springs for 3 days. I had to resume biking on the fourth day, while my parents enjoyed the second half of their vacation. I took my bike apart and shipped it back to Connecticut once I reached San Francisco.

Yes, I took Amtrak from San Francisco to Seattle. That took 24 hours, and I spent two days visiting a friend there. Then I took Amtrak from Seattle back to Boston. During the four day ride, I had a six hour layover in Chicago. The trip finally ended on August 22, 2007.
